SM army composition questions

Postby RexTalon on Sun Jun 06, 2010 1:04 pm

First I should say that I'm not crazy about special characters.

A) How do you arm your SM bikes? I like the idea of a Power Fist sgt, but is it even useful if I only have 6 bikes?

B) I'm using two razorbacks in my list, each with TL Ass Cannons. Thoughts?

C) I have 2 Dreads. I'm thinking Ass Cannon/CCW, and Iron Clad with Hurr. Bolter and S Hammer. Thoughts?

D) 2 Preds. 1 TL LC sponson LCs. and Autocannon with sponson HBs. Anything I should add? Should I favor one?

E) Devastators. I have 2 LC, 2 PCs, 4 MLs. What should I use? Also, do I fill out the squad with ablative SMs?

F) Scouts with sniper rifles and a ML. A waste of time or a good character killer?

A) I usually only used flamers or Meltaguns for special weapons on Bikes. Yes on the Fist, but only if you plan on getting into HTH with them.

B) Very shooty and I like the mech concept you've got going on with the below posts.

C) That's kind of short range. Depending on your tactics, it may work.

D) Smoke, extra armor, maybe an H/K missile.

E) 2 PC, 2 ML and always take the extra Marines.

F) Waste of points IMO.
Frosting straight!!!

These days I'd rarely take a Dreadnought without a Multi-Melta. Consider making it Venerable for BS5. Dropped in an advantageous position from a Drop Pod, those things are lethal. Ironclads can quite happily footslog it with AV13, although it's probably best to run instead of shooting with them on turn 1. I like the way you've set your Ironclad up though, it's a nice jack of all trades build which will always come in useful.

Meltaguns and Flamers on Bike squads are really nice, and SM bikers are super cheap compared to their Chaos equivalent. I'd wager that a power fist would be a bit overkill unless you're going for a big squad with a bike mounted Independent Character in there to deal with anything too fast for your Power Fist to reliably take out before it dies. I'd personally keep the bike squads 3 man to play on the aforementioned value for points. One squad on each flank with 2 meltaguns in each will be enough to make the enemy think twice about putting armour out wide. It's a steal at 110pts. Just be wary of Doom Sirens/Flamestorm Cannons when you turbo boost, as they can make a real mess of your bikes very quickly.

Scouts to me are perfect for Outflanking onto an objective or heavy weapons squad and taking them out. I'd probably go with the standard boltguns or combat blades, and arm the sergeant with a combi-flamer and melta bombs.
