iPad ???

Postby Comar on Wed Jan 27, 2010 3:34 pm

Seriously?

Steve Jobs just introduced the iPad... basically just a huge iPhone/MacBook.
I'm not impressed. Okay so it might be a nice kindle... but what else?? I have to hold it in my hands all the time? It's pretty huge, not like an ipod you can easily rest in your hands. I have a MacBook and I like being able to actually put it down while watching movies and listening to music. Also, this iPad will get fucking fingerprints all over it.

I don't see the point.

Star Trek Medpad!

Actually, I want a tablet netbook for my army lists for when I play games. I'm not impressed with the iPad though and have no desire to own one. A big let down is that it's just a bigger iphone/ipod touch; I have both (phone provided by work, dislike it) and I'm not a fan of the operating system.

My wife and I had this exact same discussion not more than 10 minutes ago. She has an iPhone and the screen just broke after 12.1 months of service (just after the warranty expired). I can't imagine having a larger piece of glass would make it any more structurally sound. I mean, I'm no engineer, but wouldn't it break easier? And being more difficult to handle almost assures that you're going to break that highly expensive piece of glass in the first couple months.

FYI, they don't "let" you just buy the glass. You have to buy the whole screen.

I think it's pretty cool, but pretty impractical. However, there's some nice stuff releasing with it that increase its versatility. Add the keyboard dock, the case, and all the net apps available like Google Documents and whatnot, plus material synced from iTunes such as music, movies, etc, and you've got for all intents and purposes a new home computer.

Seems like an uber netbook to me, plus more. I think it's pretty neat, but then I'm a confessed Macfag.

Some stuff.

More stuff from CNet. Pretty cool.

IDK... the bezel seems way too big/thick, and I would be afraid of breaking the connector between the keyboard and iPad. I wouldn't call it an uber netbook; an uber iPod, but not netbook. The processor doesn't seem that impressive for a netbook at the fact that it can't multi-task also drops it out of the category. Uber-kindle/book reader perhaps...

I was talking to some co-workers about the iPad and one said that it's an iPod touch for old people, like how you buy them over-sized calculators.

Saw this and had to smile

I bought an HP touchsmart tx2z (a multitouch capable tablet PC with a 12" screen. It's just a bit bigger than a netbook but with all the CPU power of a normal laptop.) last summer and I've been loving it. However I can still use mine as a laptop, where the iPad cannot, so I'd say Apple fails unless they have some sort of improvement on the screen that I don't know about...for instance it can be read without the backlight on, like a kindle, or it can be read outside at noon despite the sun's glare.

I've been wondering about the latetest HP tablets. I have an older one for work, tc4400, which I love save for one thing... the weight. I use to lug the thing around all day as I walked around school campuses resolving tickets and it just was heavy for handling. If I could get one around 2lbs, I would be happy. The one I have been drooling over is the Asus T101 which I have been wanting for over a year. I would mainly use it for surfing the web, post on the 'Yammer and for my army lists so I can go paperless.

For weight, I'm used to a really big Dell Inspiron, so it's light by my standard but its more than 3 lbs. Weight isn't a big deal for me anyway since I usually have a backpack full of books. The HP is definitely small compared to anything but the netbooks.

The problem isn't when it's in a bag or in my lap; I use to walk around with it in my hand, taking notes and referencing tickets.

I love my iPhone, but the iPad doesn't interest me. Karadek said it's a "netbook plus more" only, it's exactly the opposite: it's a netbook with fewer features. You can't run your own apps on it, it doesn't support flash, and it's completely locked into the iTunes store. That's OK for a phone, but not for a computer.

If it was able to connect to everything it would change the world. But instead of making money selling the portal to information (the ipad), Apple is trying to make money cornering the content market by restricting the ipad to only things they sell. I just don't think this is a wise move. I think they should jack up the price and make it connect to everything under the sun, including your coffee maker and light switches. Then everyone would have to have one, they could charge twice and much and they'd sell 100 times as many. Or more.

Oh well.
