The Tripod is the big one. With good enough lighting, you might get away with no tripod, but by good enough, I mean multiple 100 watt daylight bulbs placed within a foot or so of the mini.
It really is next to impossible to get good pics without a tripod.
BUT, here is a work around to try:
Since the key is getting the camera still when the photo is taken, you might be able to place it on a stack of books or magazines, and maybe even give the stack a slight down angle. If you are using a camera with a swivel in the body like some of the Nikon Coolpix models, this is even easier. It is tough to stack things to get the right height and angle, but it can be done. It's just very annoying...
