2004 Painting Contest!

Postby FatherNurgle on Wed May 12, 2004 4:49 am

Time for this year's contest, hooray! You can see all the rules at:

http://groups.msn.com/WarhammerMiniatureGalleries/contestrules2004.msnw

I've made a few changes this year:

1. There are 9 categories:

Best Fantasy Mini (including large monsters)
Best Sci Fi Mini (including large creatures)
Best Fantasy Unit (5 or more models)
Best Sci Fi Unit (5 or more models)
Best Vehicle or War Machine (including historical vehicles, tanks, dreads, support weapons, chariots, stone throwers, etc.)
Best Beginner Mini (if you have never entered a contest before and don't consider yourself an expert painter)
Best 2-Dimensional Art (illustrations; drawings or paintings)
Open Category (anything else, including anything that doesn't fit in another category, such as terrain pieces, tables, large-scale or small-scale models, busts, historical figures, non-wargaming miniatures, "greens," conversions, dioramas, etc.)

Monique Denoir, Female Vampire (Thanks to a suggestion by Nekron99, this year we have a category in which everyone will paint the same mini. I chose this mini by Reaper because it’s cheap, widely available, and a very nice sculpt. You can view her here:
http://www.reapermini.com/store/customer/product.php?productid=565&cat=0&page=1

NOTE: Nekron99 has several Monique minis; he will send one to you for only $2.50!

2. Last year, I timed it poorly (at the holidays) and didn't give enough time for submissions, so this year we're doing it in the summer, and allowing 10 weeks for submissions (entries are due by 8/1/04 but can be submitted at any time).

3. Judging will be done by important waryammerites, as follows. These people may vote, but not all will. If you feel you should be able to judge the entries, and you're not listed here, you can contact me and I'll consider your request:

4. Because they’re former painting contest winners: Aku_Djinn, Brother Argos, cento, Crazee Eight, Daniel, FatherNurgle, KelmarNG, pathwinder14, rogueassassin, Torog Gathroda, Tycho, VonCarstein, wolfsbane21, Wolvzbane. Because they’re COW’s: Auriol, fallen668, SeerBrun. Because they’re great painters who just haven’t won yet: Chronophague, Nekron99, Kurgan the Lurker. Because they’re Top 10 Posters: Trunks, dakka, gnollman, shifty, Karadek, Dragyn, danny842003. Just Because: IraShaine, Meltagun, Necromutant

5. AWARDS: The winners in all categories will receive online recognition in the form of a special title ("Waryammer Painting Master") and graphic (purity seals) attached to all their Waryammer posts. If you're a competitive painter, it's an official contest win you can claim on your painting resume.

The winner in the Best Beginner Single Miniature category will receive a selection of metal miniatures donated by FatherNurgle. The winner of the Monique Denoir category will receive some new Windsor Newton Series #7 brushes donated by Nekron99. The winner of the Best Sci Fi Squad category will receive a WARMACHINE battle group boxed set donated by gnollman. The winner of the Best Fantasy Miniature category will receive a Ral Partha Ghost Dragon, donated by kkoene at http://www.parvusmachina.com/home.htm.

Other awards may be added over the course of the contest. IF ANYONE ELSE WANTS TO DONATE PRIZES, let FatherNurgle know.

Feel free to ask me any questions by PM, email to fastball24@msn.com or here in this thread.

so would WARMACHINE! minis count as fantasy or sci-fi? And can a caster battlegroup count as a squad?

one quick question : for a "squad/unit" entry, do we need to include a list for them?

fallen: WARMACHINE...good question. You could make an argument either way. The official line is that it is an environment that combines the best of traditional fantasy with steam power and gunpowder..." so I think Fantasy is the most accurate category.

Ebola: You need not include a "list" if by that you mean game stats. But you need to photograph them as a group and give them a name, like "Seer Council" or "Middenheimers."

Balor: the link appears to work just fine. If you can't get it, just go to google and type "Monique Denoir" and you'll find her somewhere.

Warlock: Yes entries are due by August 1st but can be submitted any time before then.

So are the judges allowed to vote for our own work if we submit? How exactly will the rules on that work. I will be entering at least 2 categories.

If Warmachine is fantasy, I would assume Confrontation guys with rifles would be too?

Maybe I missed this in the wording. Can you enter one model in multiple categories?

WARMACHINE! is kind of gap crossing in it's genre as to where to place it. It is almost but not quite sci fi. confrontation on the other hand though bills itself as a fantasy game.

Nekron: Confrontation is clearly fantasy. It's like a Chaos Dwarf with a blunderbuss.

Alex: good question, it was not clarified. You can only enter each model into ONE category.

:-?
one more question from my side!!

the squad i'm thinking of as my squad entry usually has an independent character stuck to it, [=I=]... are stuck on independent characters fine for the squad catagory?
just wondering... it's already more than 5 figs without the =i=, so not bad if no!

:P
and that was my 666th post...
friggin anti-climatic if you ask me!!!
